| The perseverance of Fort Zeelandia, Suriname | | It’s funny how recent events can change the way people look at what age old history left behind for us to enjoy. Originally built by the English in 1651 and first named Fort Willoughby and later renamed Fort Zeelandia by the Dutch after they traded New Amsterdam (New York) for Suriname, this fortress became the scene of the notorious December murders of 1982, and its character changed. Its beauty however persevered; made out of blocks carved from rockhard soil, the fortress is located in a beautiful garden of towering mahogany trees and surrounded by a set of historical wooden houses that the city of Suriname is famous for. Today Fort Zeelandia is a popular tourist attraction, perfect for a stroll through yesteryear. | |
